Phoenix, AZ (February 25, 2022) – Two adults died and two children were left in critical condition following a car accident involving a Ford Mustang and another vehicle on Interstate 10 in Phoenix on Sunday, February 20th.

DPS officials have since identified the fatal victims as 30-year-old Jimmy Lee Greenwood, a resident of Surprise and the driver of the Mustang, and his passenger as 35-year-old Farren Isabel Relerford, a resident of El Mirage.

According to sources, the collision took place at about 12:00 a.m. when troopers were notified of a crash with serious injuries in the eastbound lanes of the interstate in the area of 59th Avenue.

Upon their arrival, troopers found two deceased adults and two injured children inside the wrecked vehicle.

A four-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy who were in the back seat of the Mustang were taken to a regional hospital with critical injuries.

An investigation indicated that the Mustang was racing another vehicle moments before the crash.

Police said that the other vehicle is considered a “non-contact” party, meaning it did not make physical contact with the crashed vehicle, but could have played a role in the accident.

Driver impairment has not been ruled out.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.

Passenger Fatalities in Arizona

When you lose a member of your family to negligence, several lives will be impacted by the tragic and unexpected loss and, in many instances, will also experience severe economic hardships. Nevertheless, not just anyone is entitled to file a claim for damages against the at-fault party. In Arizona, the only people able to file a wrongful death claim are:

  • Surviving spouses
  • Surviving children
  • Parents or guardians
  • A representative of the deceased’s estate on behalf of a parent, child, or spouse

It is necessary to keep in mind that an attorney acts as a representative of the survivors, referred to as beneficiaries, to ensure that the case runs smoothly and efficiently. This is especially important if multiple surviving family members are involved.

Arizona courts typically follow the above-listed line of succession when deciding who can be awarded financial compensation in a wrongful death claim. This process can become quite complicated if more than one family member tries to file a claim or demands a certain portion of the settlement. Working with a Phoenix personal injury attorney could be essential to ensuring you are not cut out of the claim.

Additionally, a surviving spouse is the only person who can file in the name of a surviving child, especially a minor.
