Mesa, AZ (March 23, 2022) – Police responded to the scene when a 21-year-old man driving over 100 mph crashed into another car, killing an elderly man and his wife On Tuesday, March 22nd.

The fatal accident took place at about 5:30 p.m. on Main Street in the area of Lindsay Road.

Upon their arrival, first responders discovered that two vehicles, a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica and a 2009 Chrysler 300C, were involved in the crash. The passenger in the Pacifica, 82-year-old Ronald Hettich, died at the scene.

Hettich’s wife, 80-year-old Irma, who was driving the car at the time of the collision, was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Chrysler 300C, 21-year-old Gezane Izreal Cabanillas-Lape, sustained no significant injuries. His 21-year-old female passenger, however, underwent emergency surgery for internal bleeding.

An investigation determined that the Hettichs were driving northbound on Windsor crossing over Main Street when Cabanillas-Lape, who was driving westbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed, crashed into the passenger side of Hettich’s vehicle.

Cabanillas-Lape’s car then struck a curb, a tree, a street sign, and, finally, a metal fence.

According to investigators, Cabanillas-Lape was driving at speeds of over 100 mph in a 45 mph zone when the accident occurred. He showed no signs of drug or alcohol impairment. He was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald and Irma Hettich, at this time.

Wrongful Deaths in Arizona

No matter how it happens, nothing ever prepares you for the premature death of someone you love. When that death is the result of another person’s negligence, it is that much harder to understand how this could have happened.

A Mesa wrongful death attorney can’t undo the heartache of wrongful death, but they can help surviving family members get the compensation they deserve.

When a victim endures injuries and other damages caused by someone else’s negligence, they are entitled to file a personal injury suit to seek recovery for those damages. In the event that negligence brings about the victim’s death, however, family members will have to file a  claim to ensure recovery for their loss.

There is no amount of money that will bring back your lost loved one, but our Mesa personal injury attorneys believe that the financial security provided by a wrongful death case award or settlement can help you rebuild your life and regain some sense of normalcy after an unexpected and preventable death.
