Tonopah, AZ – One Hospitalized Following Collision Between Two Tractor-Trailers on I-10

HomeBlogTonopah, AZ – One Hospitalized Following Collision Between Two Tractor-Trailers on I-10

Tonopah, AZ (May 21, 2022) – A collision between two tractor-trailers and an SUV put one person in the hospital on Tuesday, May 17th.

Officials with the Department of Public Safety said the crash took place at about 7:00 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 just outside of Tonopah.

At this point, the cause of the incident is unknown, but DPS said one of the tractor-trailers involved in the crash overturned and the cab was ripped from the trailer. The cab then rolled into the oncoming lanes of traffic, creating an obstruction.

The operator of that tractor-trailer was airlifted to a trauma center. Officials did not say if the other truck operator or the driver of the SUV sustained injuries.

Video from the site shows one tractor-trailer in the dirt on the westbound side of the interstate. The cab could be seen a short distance away, clipped off the trailer with debris scattered all around. A traffic jam could be seen backing up for miles.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes were temporarily closed for police investigation.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Truck Accidents in Arizona

Although tractor-trailer collisions do not get the same attention as collisions involving smaller vehicles. they are often much more serious. According to the law, a truck is defined as a motor vehicle that weighs 10,000 pounds or more, Many tractor-trailers, however, are much larger, weighing up to 80,000 pounds. For comparison, an average passenger vehicle weighs in at about 3,000 pounds.

Contrary to popular belief, not all tractor-trailer incidents are the fault of the truck’s operator. If the action or inaction of another driver caused the accident, then the injured truck driver is eligible to collect compensation for their damages the same way that the driver of a car would. These damages may include medical bills, pain, suffering, lost earnings, and many other crash-related expenses.

The legal definition of a truck accident is an event or sequence of events that involves a vehicle weighing 10,000 pounds or more and resulting in bodily harm, damage to property, and/or death.

For the victim of a tractor-trailer collision to be eligible for recovery, the accident must first meet the criteria for negligence. To establish negligence, all four of the following must be proven:

  • The victim was owed a duty of care by the other driver
  • The other driver breached that duty of care by behaving in a reckless or irresponsible manner
  • That breach of duty was the direct cause of the accident that caused the victim’s injuries
  • Those injuries resulted in financial damages

Negligence can be proven through numerous forms of evidence, like photos, videos, police reports, and witness statements. In most cases, there are additional types of evidence that would be helpful in showing negligence, including documented signs of the driver’s drug use, intoxication, or extreme fatigue.
