Chandler, AZ (June 22, 2022) – Police have identified 23-year-old Imari Pritchett as the woman who was fatally struck by a car on Monday, June 20th in Chandler.
The deadly incident took place in the eastbound lanes of the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in the area of Price Road. An initial investigation determined that Pritchett’s vehicle was disabled on the side of the roadway due to a previous accident.
In spite of an off-duty officer’s warnings to stay inside her SUV for the time being, Pritchett was attempting to cross the freeway when she was struck by a 36-year-old man from Chandler and died at the scene.
The driver of the striking vehicle stopped and called 911. He told dispatch he had struck something but then fled the scene. Officers used his phone number to get his home address. He was located and detained a short while later.
He is being charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a fatal collision. Additional charges are pending.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Ms. Imari Pritchett, at this time.
In Arizona, it is unlawful to get behind the wheel of any type of motor vehicle if your blood-alcohol level is greater than 0.08%. Drivers are obligated to have a BAL under this amount for at least two hours prior to driving or otherwise being in control of an automobile.
If the driver in question is the operator of a commercial vehicle, such as a tractor-trailer, their blood-alcohol level must be under 0.04%.
It is against the law in Arizona to drive any type of motor vehicle, including motorcycles, as well as some scooters and mopeds, if you are impaired in any way. This means, that even if your blood-alcohol level is well below the legal threshold of 0.08%, and you are still showing signs of impairment, you can not legally operate a motor vehicle.
When a motorist chooses to violate the state’s drunk driving laws and then gets into a collision, they will quite probably be arrested and have criminal charges filed against them. After their arrest, they will be issued a summons to appear in criminal court where they will face prosecution by the state’s attorney. They could also be looking at imprisonment and numerous hefty administrative fines.
By comparison, a personal injury case is handled in a civil court. These claims allow injured victims to seek monetary compensation for the injuries and losses they endured. Should the respondent is ordered to remunerate the victim for their losses, these payments are not the same as court-ordered fines. The purpose of the remuneration is to compensate the victim for the expenses, such as medical bills, they sustained due to the respondent’s negligent or reckless actions, such as driving while under the influence.
