Scottsdale, AZ (May 19, 2022) – Local law enforcement officers were called to investigate the cause of a fatal multi-vehicle collision in Scottsdale on Wednesday, May 18th.

Emergency rescue crews were dispatched to the scene in the area of Cactus Road and 64th Street at about 5:00 a.m.

According to sources, three cars were involved in the crash and one person was pronounced dead.

Reports show that a Lexus was being driven southbound along 64th Street when the driver failed to come to a stop at the red light at the intersection of Cactus Road and collided with a box truck.

Both the Lexus and the box truck then crashed into a Honda Civic that was waiting in a turn lane.

The driver of the Lexus, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, was pronounced at the scene. At this point, police suspect that both speed and alcohol played a role in the event.

The drivers of the box truck and the Civic were transported in what are believed to be non-critical conditions.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their families in hopes of a full recovery.

Driving Under the Influence in Arizona

In Arizona, it is unlawful to get behind the wheel of any type of motor vehicle if your blood-alcohol level is greater than 0.08%. Drivers are obligated to have a BAL under this amount for at least two hours prior to driving or otherwise being in control of an automobile.

If the driver in question is the operator of a commercial vehicle, such as a tractor-trailer, their blood-alcohol level must be under 0.04%.

It is against the law in Arizona to drive any type of motor vehicle, including motorcycles, as well as some scooters and mopeds, if you are impaired in any way. This means, that even if your blood-alcohol level is well below the legal threshold of 0.08% if you are still showing signs of impairment, you can not legally operate a motor vehicle.

When a motorist chooses to violate the state’s drunk driving laws and then gets into a collision, they will quite probably be arrested and have criminal charges filed against them. After their arrest, they will be issued a summons to appear in criminal court where they will face prosecution by the state’s attorney. They could also be looking at imprisonment and numerous hefty administrative fines.

By comparison, a personal injury case is handled in a civil court. These claims allow injured victims to seek monetary compensation for the injuries and losses they endured. Should the respondent is ordered to remunerate the victim for their losses, these payments are not the same as court-ordered fines. The purpose of the remuneration is to compensate the victim for the expenses, such as medical bills, they sustained due to the respondent’s negligent or reckless actions, such as driving while under the influence.
