Many children love dogs and aren’t shy about getting up close and personal with them. Unfortunately, however, this is how many dog bites occur. Even the friendliest dogs may become startled and bite when a stranger tries to touch them. As a parent, there are things you can do to protect your children from getting bitten by a dog.
When your children see a cute dog waking down the street, it can be very tempting for them to reach out and pet it. However, you should warn your children to never do this under any circumstances. They don’t know the temperament of an unfamiliar dog and can get bitten.
If your children approach a neighbor or friend with a dog, instruct them to ask permission before petting the dog. Some dogs may appear friendly, but they might actually not feel comfortable being touched by strangers. It’s always better to ask beforehand to avoid any incidents.
If the dog’s owner gives your child permission to pet their dog, make sure they know how to correctly pet it. Instruct your child to kneel down and let the dog come to them. Then, tell your child to let the dog sniff their hands before gently petting them.
Sometimes kids will just be kids. They might try to pull a dog’s tail or ears and think they’re just playing. However, many dogs will get irritated with this kind of behavior and may snap back. That’s why you should warn your kids to never tease dogs and talk about the consequences that might happen.
When dogs are sleeping or eating, they don’t want to be disturbed. However, many kids might not be aware of this fact. To prevent your children from getting bitten, tell them to never bother dogs while they are eating or sleeping.
If your child is bitten by a dog, you should take them to see a doctor immediately. While minor dog bites aren’t usually serious, more serious bites can lead to complications. A doctor will evaluate your child’s dog bite and recommend the appropriate treatment.
